Understanding Sciatica

Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain radiating along the sciatic nerve, which extends from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. It typically affects only one side of the body and can range from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation.

Causes of Sciatica

Sciatica can be caused by several conditions:

  • Herniated Disc: A common cause of sciatica is a herniated disc, where the disc presses on the sciatic nerve.

  • Bone Spurs: Overgrowth of bone (bone spurs) on the vertebrae can compress the sciatic nerve.

  • Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spine can put pressure on the sciatic nerve.

  • Piriformis Syndrome: When the piriformis muscle in the buttocks irritates the sciatic nerve, it can cause sciatica.

  • Injuries: Injuries to the pelvis, buttocks, or thighs can also lead to sciatica.

Movements to Help Relieve Your Sciatica

  • Stretching: Stretching exercises targeting the lower back and legs can relieve sciatic nerve pressure.

  • Strengthening Exercises: Strengthening the core and lower back muscles can provide better support and reduce pain.

  • Aerobic Exercise: Low-impact activities like walking, swimming, or cycling can improve overall fitness and reduce sciatica symptoms.

  • Proper Lifting Techniques: Using your legs to lift heavy objects can prevent straining your back.
